A Sacred Lie

Sarah is told throughout her entire childhood that she must wait until she's married in order to have sex. Her parents, teachers and everyone she knows tells her that getting pregnant is terrible for a young single woman, and the only way to stop it is to wait until she's married.

Otherwise, she’ll be condemned to a life of Hell on Earth, be shunned by God, and all her children will grow up to be criminals. Eager to ensure that she upholds God’s plan for her life, she is dutifully compliant. She knows she must only share herself with her future husband or as a way to get closer to God, but all is not as it seems as she grows from a child into a ripe young woman in the Catholic church, which is filled with older, wiser and more experienced priests. Will they help keep her on the path of righteousness or corrupt her for their own twisted pleasures?

  1. Chapter 1 – Sister Mary Anastasia

Sarah walked into classroom 2. It was just before lunch on her second day of 6th grade, and so far, she’d found it challenging. She was no longer stuck in the same classroom all day, only to leave for the weird classes, like gym, music and art, which only happened once a week or once every two weeks. Her favorite class was art. Yesterday, they got to paint with melted wax. Her class was one of the lucky ones. They got art the first day of school.

However, this class, she was certain, would not be her favorite, and she’d been worried about it all summer. It was the dirty class, and it was supposed to start yesterday but hadn’t. Instead, they’d had study hall. Sarah wasn’t sure why, but she was relieved that it got pushed back a day. She hoped they’d push it back all year.

It was Sister Mary Anastasia’s class on human sexuality and reproduction. Sarah was worried it’d be full of sin and dirty pictures. She’d heard from some of the seventh-graders that they showed private parts! The kind of parts on your body that only the doctor could touch with a gloved hand and only during an examination that required those parts to be touched!

Those parts were completely forbidden to be touched by anyone else, and even viewing them was a sin! Sarah knew. Her mom had said so. To know these things was vitally important. It was right up there with stranger danger and not stealing and honoring your parents and worshiping God and doing His work.

Sarah took a seat in the front row near the windows and adjusted her plaid black and white skirt until she was certain it entirely covered her modesty, and no one could look under it and see her underwear. She had heard that not all the boys took the 10 commandments seriously, especially as they got older.

The classroom was nice, and the windows were open. It was a hot August day, and St. Seton’s Catholic School didn't have air conditioning. Sarah wasn’t sure why, but the playground rumors said that there was no air conditioning so that all the students could sweat out their sins. Sarah found it to be a believable explanation.

After all, they were all dirty. Everyone sinned every day, and it wasn’t always possible to go to confession every day. Just yesterday, Sarah had spotted a multi-colored pencil on the floor. As you wrote with it, the lead changed colors, creating rainbow text. Sarah had always wanted a pencil like that, but her mother forbid it. The only appropriate colors to write in were black or blue, and blue was only to be used if you absolutely could not find a black pen or a pencil.

Sarah had picked the multi-colored pencil up. It was beautiful. The most exquisite pencil she’d ever seen. Sarah thought about keeping it, but then she remembered that would be stealing, so she gave it to the teacher so she could find the student who dropped it. Just thinking about keeping that pencil was a sin! Unfortunately, there would be no confession until Friday, and it was Tuesday. However, Sarah did the next best thing, she wrote it down in her sin notebook so she’d remember to tell the priest.

Sister Mary Anastasia stepped to the front of the classroom, holding a textbook on human reproduction. “Good morning class. How are you all today?”

The entire class said they were ‘Very well, thank you, Sister Mary Anastasia.’

Sister Mary Anastasia smiled. “Excellent. I have a treat for you this semester. Of course, you’ve all probably heard schoolyard rumors about this class.”

“They said it’s about private parts!” Sarah said.

“Yes, little ma’am, but please, remember to raise your hand and be acknowledged before speaking,” Sister Mary Anastasia said.

“Sorry, sister,” Sarah said.

“It is forgiven. This class is about your private parts and what makes you female and the little boys male. However, we will be discussing these things respectfully and in accordance with the catholic teachings.”

Sarah glanced around the room. Everyone looked nervous. A few were giggling.

“Now, you may find these topics funny or embarrassing,” Sister Mary Anastasia said. “However, you must strive to behave beyond your age.”

The giggling stopped.

A student raised his hand.

Sister Mary Anastasia looked at the boy. “What would you like to say, Charles?”

“My dad said looking at dirty pictures is a sin,” Charles said.

“Looking at dirty pictures is a sin. It could lead to lust and unGodly thoughts,” Sister Mary Anastasia said. “However, we will not be looking at scantily clad women and men for our own sinful pleasures. Instead, we will be exploring the human body and how it works. The pictures in your textbooks are perfectly acceptable to view.”

The class let out a collective sigh of relief.

Sister Mary Anastasia continued. “In the eyes of the Roman Catholic Church, human reproduction is a sacred process designed by God. It involves both the physical and spiritual aspects of our beings. Let us start by understanding the beauty of procreation and when it is acceptable to procreate.” She looked out across the classroom. “Yes, Jane?”

“My mom said procrastination is a sin,” Jane said.

“Procrastination is not doing your work in a timely manner,” Sister Mary Anastasia said. “Procreation is the process by which we create more beings in God’s image.”

“Oh,” Jane said.

Sister Mary Anastasia turned to the board and wrote both words in large letters with bright white chalk. Then, she wrote the definitions of both words. “Does anyone else not understand the difference between procreation and procrastination?”

“No, Sister Mary,” the class said.

“Good. Let’s continue. Open your books to the first page of Chapter 1,” Sister Mary Anastasia said.

Sarah opened her book to Chapter 1 and looked at the page. She gasped and slammed the book shut.

“Miss Sarah, please open your book and look at page 20,” Sister Mary Anastasia said. “There is nothing sinful or dirty on that page. It is merely the depiction of the male and female bodies.”

Sarah opened her book again. The pictures looked dirty to her. There was a naked man and a naked woman right on the first page.

“Now, if you’ll all look, all of the parts in the images are labeled.” Sister Mary Anastasia proceeded to name and explain each body part in the diagrams for both the male and the female forms.

“Oh, that’s what it’s called,” Joey said in an AHA moment.

“What is called what?” Sister Mary Anastasia asked.

“My…” He looked at the diagram. “Penis.”

“How is that different than what you’ve heard at home?” Sister Mary Anastasia asked.

“My dad calls it his Johnson. My mom calls it little winky,” Joe said. “My babysitter calls it the peepee.”

The class laughed.

“What other names have your parents used for your penises?” Sister Mary Anastasia asked.

The boys in the class started naming all the names they’d heard for penis. Dick. Member. Organ. Wang. Knob. Chubby. Weenie. Schlong. Joystick. Banana. Rod. Love Muscle. Baby-Maker. Ding-a-ling and manhood.

“Those are all slang names,” Sister Mary Anastasia said. “The correct term is penis.”

After the class had calmed down, Sister Mary Anastasia covered all the female parts. “Have your parents ever used any other words for these parts?”

The class spouted off everything they’d ever heard the breasts and vagina called. Dirty Pillows, Cunt. Pussy. Tits. Jugs. Melons. Torpedoes. Airbags. Down There. Vag. Downstairs. Lady Bits. Pink Taco. Hoo Hoo. Snatch.

“Why would they call it a snatch?” Jane asked.

“I truly have no idea,” Sister Mary Anastasia said.

“I thought snatch meant to grab,” Joey said.

“It does,” Sister Mary Anastasia said. “Which is why it makes no sense. Either way, you’re parents are very creative with their language. However, the correct terms are vagina and breasts.”

“Do our parents know we’re learning this?” Jane asked.

“They do. Consent forms were sent out prior to the start of the school year. Your parents had to sign those forms and send them back,” Sister Mary Anastasia said. “If you’re in this class and not study hall, your parents signed the forms.” She waited for the class to absorb that information before continuing. “Now, these body parts are what makes us male and female, and they are what allow us to reproduce and create children.”

“Wait,” Sarah said.

“Yes, Sarah?” Sister Mary Anastasia said.

“We were created by these bits?” Sarah asked.

“You were, and that’s what this class is about. I’m going to explain to you how those parts work together to create children,” Sister Mary Anastasia said. “However, it’s important to note that what we cover is an act that is shared between a man and a woman who love each other very much and are married. It is forbidden to procreate outside of marriage.”

“Is that a bad sin?” Jane asked.

“It’s a very bad sin,” Sister Mary Anastasia said. “One of the worst.”

The class gasped.

Sarah raised her hand.

“Yes, Sarah?”

“What happens if you procreate without being married?”

“It is a moral failing and a very serious matter,” Sister Mary Anastasia said. “You should only remove your clothing in front of a member of the opposite sex who is your spouse. Sex is a very holy act that should only be shared between spouses. Prior to getting married, you should live a chaste and virtuous life. Otherwise, you could become an unwed mother and live in poverty and suffer in humiliation and squalor for your entire life with your bastard child.”

The bell, signaling the end of class, rang.

“Read the entirety of chapters 1 and 2 for your homework. We will cover chapter 2 tomorrow,” Sister Mary Anastasia said.

Sarah closed her book, stood and walked out of the classroom. The next class was lunch, and today was tacos. After lunch, she would have art and music and she thought history.
