One of the things you need as a novelist and freelance writer is a solid printer. A solid printer is one that holds at least 100 pages of paper and preferably 250 pages or more. Most deskjet or officehet printers only hold 50 or so pages before they need to be reloaded, and the ink costs can quickly skyrocket if you need to print more than a few pages a day.

OfficeJet Printers

If you don’ t have a lot of money, an office jet printer from any of the major manufacturers, including HP, Lexmark, Brother and Cannon, will work, but the moment you need to print multiple copies of your 250 page fiction novel, the costs to print using a standard inkjet, deskjet or officejet printer will rival the costs associated with having Kinkos or UPS print your documents.

HP ENVY 4520 All-in-One Printer

The HP ENVY 4520 All-in-One Printer prints, copies and scans. It will also print photos and boasts wireless connectivity. The purchasers of this printer can enjoy black and white copies at 9.5 pages her minute and color copies at 6.8 pages per minute. It has a monthly duty cycle of 1,000 pages with a recommendation to print no more than 400 pages per month. The paper trays holds a maximum of 100 sheets, and the output tray holds a maximum of 20 sheets.  the cost to print with my last HP printer was about seven cents per page, and the ink cartridges, even the extra large cartridges on draft mode only printed about 700 pages.  If you're printing large documents, this may not be the printer for you, but if you are still sporadic with your printing, this one will perform quite well.  It's especially good for beginning freelance writers.

Epson Expression Home XP-330 Wireless Color Photo Printer

If you are looking for an inkjet printer that is under $50, you may like the Epson Expression Home XP-330 Wireless Color Photo Printer with Scanner and Copier. This printer also prints, copies and scans, which is great if you need to make duplicates of a document or scan a document into your machine for editing. Epson Expression Home XP-330 Wireless Color Photo Printer takes four separate ink cartridges for black, magenta, yellow and cyan, which can be economical since you only have to replace the color that’s empty. The duty cycle for this printer is higher than the HP ENVY 4520 All-in-One at 3,000 pages per month. However, it only has a 100 page capacity. This printer is good for beginning freelancers and novelists.

Laser Printers

Laser printers can be more pricey than inkjet and office jet printers, especially if you need a color laser or an all-in-one laser, but if all you want to do is print out bulk pages for your freelancing career or novelist career, black and white laser printers can be extremely affordable, usually between $50 and $150 with toner cartridges range from $30 to $114, and toner cartridges can print between 1400 and 1,700 pages or more per cartridge. However, it’s very important to look up the cost of the toner cartridges before you buy your laser printer to ensure that you can afford them.

The Brother HL-L2300D Monochrome Laser Printer with Duplex Printing is a durable, reasonably affordable printer that retails between $50 and $100. The toner cartridges range in price from $30 to $50, depending on where you buy them. The less expensive toner cartridges print 1,400 pages, and the more expensive toner cartridges print 2,600 pages, which is basically a box of printer paper. While this is only a black and white laser printer, the pages come out crisp and clear, and the machine has the ability to print large documents, up to 400 pages, reasonably quickly. It offers automatic dual sided printing and prints single-sided pages at 27 pages per minute. It’s maximum monthly duty cycle is 10,000 pages, and the paper tray holds 250 pages, which means less out-of-paper warnings. I use this machine to print complex article and blog post directions and to print large manuscripts of up to 400 pages. The sample toner cartridge printed about 1,000 pages at 300dpi. In the four months I’ve been using this printer, I’ve had to replace the toner one time, and I’ve printed around 2,000 pages.

Additional Inkjet and Laser Printer Accessories

Many laser and inkjet printers no longer come with data cables.  When you open the box, you will find the printer, the installation software, if applicable, and a power cord.  If the printer doesn't have wifi capabilities or you do not plan to use the wifi option on your printer, you will need a printer cable.  This is best purchased at the time you purchase the printer.  Otherwise, you could find your self running to the nearest Walmart or Best Buy for a new printer cable.
